Enter Do What You’re Told, a groundbreaking yet simple initiative by Hecklers Press. Do What You’re Told is a Substack newsletter/site which aggregates non-mainstream news, bringing frequently censored voices and suppressed and canceled ideas to the forefront. The Hecklers, the cheeky writers behind DWYT, created the online newsletter in order to help people find what they may not even know they’re looking for: truthful independent journalism. Equally notable is DWYT’s promotion formula. Physical media, like billboards, will blanket cities in a guerrilla-marketing style advertising campaign. That means everyone — including those who don’t know what they are missing — can find us and our independent media sources, too.

Do What You’re Told mimics Yahoo News’ proven newsletter format, minus their mainstream media sources. Twice weekly, our subscribers get a carefully curated selection of about a dozen pieces of media from reputable independent sources in a simple, easy to digest format. These include articles, podcasts, Instagrams, TikToks, etc., which are arranged with a picture, brief title, short description, and direct link to the original news source. DWYT cites non-mainstream media sources like Russell Brand, Whitney Webb, The Free Press, Children’s Health Defense, Vandana Shiva, Jessica Reed Kraus, James Corbett and more.

A few things make us unique: First, as an aggregator of independent news, we are spotlighting rather than competing with our sources. “There are so many people in the independent media space who are creating great content. We didn’t want to create more content. We just wanted to point people to these strong, alternative voices,” explains company founder and former mainstream media journalist, Jennifer Buhl. Second, our target audience is young: under-40 with leanings across the political spectrum. Through our imagery and our voice, our vibe draws a younger crowd. And third, our promotion techniques are old-school: we use local, physical, “guerrilla-style” marketing to evade the censors and stand out from online clutter. Our tactic is to hit individual geographic areas with a slew of billboards and mailers. Our first educational ad campaign is set to launch in Fall 2023 in Philadelphia.
