PA CHD at Amish Event – 12th Annual Family Days on the Farm
Even though the weather gave this years Family Days on the Farm a couple challenges, heat and humidity hung around and torrential down pours arrived just as each days event drew to a close, there was not a soul about who would have rather been somewhere else this past weekend.
Joel Salatin, the well know organic farmer, was a keynote speaker and didn’t break a sweat in speaking for nearly four hours on the opening evening. On Saturday pediatrician Michelle Perro, spoke to a standing room only crowd under the big tent. She spoke to the spectrum of illnesses and causes striking today’s children. After speaking for 90 minutes she took questions for an hour from a crowd of several hundred people.
The generosity and hospitality of the Amish community of Lancaster County was greatly appreciated by the many “English” as well as Amish in attendance. Dinner, breakfast and lunch were offered as well as many drinks, ice cream and other treats all home made. This left many hundreds of children with lasting grins and full bellies.
Melvin Stoltzfus, the owner of the hosting farm, led a crowd into his pastures to show how his farm is embracing permaculture derived cattle grazing enhancements. Nearly a thousand trees are being planted across 44 acres of his pasture that, once mature, will produce a tremendous bounty of fodder for his stock.

The PA Chapter’s table was busy for nearly every moment of this two day event offering books and lots of handout information. The majority of participants were very familiar with CHD, perhaps in numbers that exceeded 90% of the people who spoke with us over these two days.
If you missed this years events you can join us in looking forward to next years 13th annual Family Days. Make sure to keep an eye on our Events page for that announcement and many other great events that PA CHD welcomes you to join with us.
